Loren and I have decided to take a different route with Grace than most parents these days. So many parents push their kids to write and read well beyond the actual need. And sadly it's not the kid wanting to learn and the parent guiding that child, it's more the parent sitting the kiddo down and making them learn. What a bummer. We want Grace to just be a three year old. Boring school will come soon enough. We teach her tons but on her own terms and through our natural play time. There is never a time where we sit down and make her learn, if that makes sense.
She is in preschool and they do a letter of the week and once in awhile work on writing letters and their names, but Grace is one of the kids that usually chooses not to write her name-which is fine. The teachers aren't worried as she's only 3 and still has a year and a half until kindergarten and most kids don't really start writing until around the age of 4-5. No need to work on it or pressure her, they said, so we don't. Well, what do you know. You leave the kiddo alone and she observes and studies on her own terms and ends up writing her name and my name out all by herself. The top photo is of her name. And, the bottom one is mine. The top row is a bunch of "A's" and the bottom row is my name.
It just goes to show that different kids need different kinds of learning environments. If Grace were forced to do it, she would not have done it as quickly or as happily. This girl does not work well when being forced to do something or when under stress about it. It's all about respecting her needs and when those needs are met she SOARS!
I am blown away by my gifted monkey. I can only pray she gets placed in a good kindergarten with a teacher who's willing to challenge her and adapt to her learning needs.

Letting your child be the guide is the only way to go. Pressure will get you no where. Keep it up!
